Electromagnetic Swing
Ages: 10+
This Electromagnetic Swing project shows the relationship between electricity and magnetism. A current carrying coil of wire behaves like a magnet. Since the coil is suspended above the magnet, there is a magnetic force driving the coil to swing back and forth. Altering the flow of current could alter the swing movement since the current flow dictates the polarity of the coil.
The Lorentz force (or electromagnetic force) is the science behind this project. By definition, the Lorentz force is the combination of electric and magnetic force. It results from the interaction between the electromagnetic fields.
